West Edmonton has many activities and attractions, from shopping areas to walking trails and family-focused activities.

The west side of Edmonton is known for having many shopping malls, including the notorious West Edmonton Mall, which has shopping, restaurants, and the Galaxyland theme park. The Terra Losa Centre is also an excellent place for shopping, with a wide variety of stores so you can get everything in one spot!

If you are interested in going for a walk with a stunning view, check out the Patricia Ravine, Wolf Willow Ravine, Sir Wilfred Laurier Park, or Buena Vista Park. The Wolf Willow Ravine is a great, easier walking trail with incredible views, and the length can vary between 3 and 4.6km, depending on the path you choose. Sir Wilfred Laurier Park takes you along the river and features playgrounds, a boat launch, and picnic sites, perfect for going for a walk or spending a few hours at Buena Vista Park has a walking trail that passes through greenery and river scenery. 

One of Edmonton’s biggest attractions for families with children, the Edmonton Valley Zoo, is located in the west, meaning ample opportunities for zoo-related family fun!

History

West Edmonton was formed when Malcolm Alexander Groat sold his 900-acre land to real estate developers in 1903. In 1917, the west end officially joined the city of Edmonton. Initially, West Edmonton included the communities of Glenora, Groat Estates, Westmount, and West Oliver, all of which were linked by Edward Street (now known as 124th Street).
